Since 1954, The Humane Society of the United States has been dedicated to the protection of animals through education, training for local organizations, advocacy, and hand-on programs. While local humane societies and SPCA’s are independent entities, the HSUS works with these organizations and supports their work through a variety of professional services, including training and evaluations. They supplement the efforts of local organizations by advocating for tougher laws and creating programs meant to prevent harm and cruelty to animals. With their shared goal of protecting and caring for abused, starving, and abandoned animals, they are in direct affiliation with the following organizations:

The Humane Society also provides its own network of animal sanctuaries and rescue operations, providing emergency care and homes for animals in need. Through their hard work and dedication to animal protection and safety, The Humane Society of the United States is our nation’s leading animal protection organization, providing services to more than 100,000 animals each year. The HSUS combats large-scale animals cruelties such as:

  • Puppy mills
  • Factory farming
  • Seal slaughter
  • Animal fighting
  • Horse cruelty
  • Captive hunts
  • Wildlife trade

The Humane Society of the United States also initiates active programs in farm animals, companion animals, wildlife and habitat protection, and animals in research, and provides animal protection in these areas through legislation and litigation. The HSUS’s main goal is to stop animal cruelty before it occurs, to confront animal cruelty where it exists, and to celebrate animals across the America and around the world.

The Humane Society of the United States works with animal shelters by providing resources which further help them to achieve their goals. These resources include:

  • The Humane Society of the United States has a website that offers all of the latest information on animal health and well-being.
  • They publish Animal Sheltering Magazine, which is all about the professional field of animal sheltering and rescue, and is the only magazine available that is dedicated to that field.
  • Their experts provide free advice to shelters and rescue groups, making sure that they are utilizing only the most humane, innovative, and effective programs involved with animal care.
  • Through extensive market research, The HSUS’s World Spay Day helps provide more information about the importance of spaying and neutering pets, and has greatly increased the amount of surgeries per year.
  • The Humane Society publishes books on topics such as volunteer management and coalition building, helping rescue groups and animal shelters with invaluable information and tools that help them achieve their highest potential.
  • By partnering with The Ad Council and Maddie’s Fund, the HSUS has been able to create The Shelter Pet Project, a multi-million dollar, nationwide public service advertising campaign. The Shelter Pet Project provides information on local animal shelters, and encourages pet adoption from these shelters.

  • By changing state laws, the HSUS has helped to prohibit the use of gas chambers.
  • The HSUS provides training and financial support for local agencies, helping them move to more humane methods of euthanasia.
  • Their Animal Care Expo, the largest animal care and welfare conference in the nation, has provided educational sessions on a number of important topics, such as field service, adoption, and spaying/neutering.
  • The HSUS’s Pets for Life program, described as a model of excellence by various welfare and social service organizations, has greatly influenced community outreach.
  • Their Animal Rescue Team actively helps rescue animals that are in crisis situations, providing the additional help that many local shelters need when they are overwhelmed.
  • They rebuild animal shelters that have been damaged, supplementing local budgets in order to help them recover from disasters.
  • They have provided millions of dollars to local veterinary schools and shelters, helping them to provide spay and neuter projects to local communities.
